Deep Cleaning

Ensure the sink has been cleaned first with diluted TECcare CONTROL Intermediate in the NAP sprayer to comply with the methodology in HTM0401 Part C (i.e. taps first).

  • If required, arrange a swab to be taken from the sink drain to act as a pre-clean baseline. This should be done by somebody trained in aseptic sampling techniques. Be careful as the sink may contain hazardous bacteria.
  • After cleaning the sink pour 50mls of TECcare CONTROL Intermediate directly into the drain and leave for 15 minutes. This will start to loosen any biofilm present.
  • Thoroughly shake the can of TECcare R-FOAM. Pass the tube through the seal and attach the tube and seal to the can.
  • Insert the tube down into the drain about 14 cm and ensure the flexible seal closely covers the drain.
  • With the TECcare R-FOAM can held upright, as much as possible, slowly press the foam release in short bursts of 5 seconds, stopping in between bursts to allow foam to expand.

It is important not to overfill the drain with foam as excess foam will come back into the sink with the risk of bringing bacteria with it. Try to stop the foam just short of the seal.

  • With the required amount of foam in the drain, slowly withdraw the tube from the drain being careful not to drip anywhere. (Use a wipe to clean/disinfect the tubing).
  • Leave the foam in the drain for a minimum of 10 minutes, as time permits (the longer the better).
  • To reuse the sink after a minimum of 10 minutes, turn on the taps and flush the drain.
  • After having flushed the drain, clean the sink again as in step 1.
  • Re-swab the sink drain as per step 2.
  • If you are concerned about returning bacteria to the sink and you want to ensure that the drain is completely full of foam then consider covering the sink with clingfilm or paper to act as a barrier between the sink and the environment whilst the foam is in the sink. Once the foam is washed away the clingfilm or paper can be removed and disposed of safely.

Routine Cleaning

The frequency of routine cleaning depends on how dirty the drain was in the first instance, but the aim is only to routinely clean the sink on a weekly basis. If the sink remains clean in between weekly cleans as evidenced by interim swabbing, then the frequency of cleaning can be extended to fortnightly.
